I know I haven’t blogged in a while but I just had to share my amazing experience that I had over the weekend in Georgia. For the last six years I have participated in a charity toy drive with my former studio partner, and every year I’m just blown away by the amazing support and amazing donations that we are able to make to help fellow military families in the Fort Benning community.
It’s always tough being away from my family for the five days that I spend down in Georgia, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. This year between Amy and myself we serviced 91 families. That’s right! you didn’t misread that; 91 families in two days!! We had so many toys stacked inside my little rental car that you could only get in and out through the front doors. This year we were also super excited to receive a few hundred dollars in gift cards for teens. We typically get more toddler and smaller children-geared toys, but it was just amazing to see how many families remembered that last year we talked about how the teens were left out. Our amazing families truly delivered this year!
Besides collecting the toys, getting to visit with families that I photographed when I still lived in Georgia makes the trip so amazing. There’s one family that I have seen grow from one little girl to three sassy and adorable little ladies. I’ve also been able to watch one family be created. We started with just a couple’s session a few years back and now they have grown into a family of 4. It’s incredible to see that they are all just as excited to see all of the toys collected as Amy and I are to be collecting them.
Needless to say my heart is full and I enjoyed the experience so much that I am now thinking that I need to start a second Toy Drive up here in Michigan!! If anyone has a good charity in mind please let me know. I know it’s too late to throw it together last minute, BUT I would love to start getting all my ducks in a row as soon as possible!
